Where's My ESTA at? Let's check.
Drop in your reference number and the email you used — we'll show you exactly where your authorization is in the system right now.
📋 TL;DR
Most ESTAs come back approved within minutes. Some take up to 72 hours. Don't book non-refundable flights until yours is green. Keep your reference number handy — it's your magic key for everything.
Why bother checking your status?
Real talk: nobody wants to be that traveler who shows up at the airport, hands over their passport, and gets the dreaded "your ESTA isn't approved" head-shake from the gate agent. We've seen it. It's brutal — usually a missed flight, sometimes a missed wedding or honeymoon. The fix is dead simple: check your status before you leave for the airport. Not the day of. Not at the gate. The day before, minimum.
Most people get approved fast — but a small percentage get flagged for extra review and that can take up to 72 hours. During that waiting window, you do NOT want to be locking in non-refundable flights and hotels. Our tracker lets you see exactly where things stand, so you can plan with confidence instead of crossed fingers.
Bonus reason: if your application gets denied (it happens, rarely), you want to know early. That gives you time to plan a Plan B — usually a proper visa from a U.S. embassy. The earlier you know, the more options you have. Our tracker is your early-warning system. Use it.
What does each status actually mean? 🚦
When you check your status, you'll see one of four results. Here's what each one means in plain English — and what you should do next.
✅ Approved — You're cleared!
Pop the champagne. You're good to travel under the Visa Waiver Program for the next 2 years (or until your passport expires, whichever hits first). You can hop in and out of the U.S. as many times as you want during that window — just keep each visit under 90 days. Tip: take a screenshot of your approval and save it somewhere you can find offline. Airlines and border officers can verify electronically, but having a copy on your phone is peace of mind.
⏳ Pending — Hang tight
The system needs a closer look. Don't panic — about 5–10% of all applications get this status, and the vast majority resolve within 72 hours. It doesn't mean anything's wrong. It just means a human is double-checking something before clicking the green button. Our advice: don't book non-refundable stuff yet, check back every 12 hours or so, and if you're still pending past 72 hours, ping our support team and we'll chase it down.
❌ Travel Not Authorized — Don't panic
Okay, this one stings — but it's NOT the end of your U.S. trip dreams. A denial just means you can't use the ESTA shortcut. You can still apply for a proper U.S. visa (B-1/B-2 for tourism/business) at your nearest embassy. It's slower and more involved, but it's a real path forward. Common reasons for denial: prior immigration issues, visits to certain restricted countries, or info that didn't quite line up. Hit our team — we'll help you figure out the best Plan B.
🔄 Expired — Time for a fresh one
Your old ESTA aged out. ESTAs last 2 years, OR until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you got a new passport (renewal, replacement, name change), your old ESTA is automatically toast — even if it was technically still in date. The fix is easy: just submit a new application. Apply at least 72 hours before your next flight to give yourself buffer.
💡 PRO-TIP: Where to find your reference number fast
The fastest way? Search your inbox for "ESTA". The confirmation email we sent the second you submitted has it right at the top. Also check your spam folder — automated emails sometimes get filtered. Still nothing? Your payment receipt also has it. Last resort: ping our team with your passport number and email, and we'll dig it out for you.
Where the heck is my reference number?
We get this question a LOT. Your reference number is your magic key for tracking, modifying, or asking us anything about your application. Here are the four places it lives — start with #1 and work down:
1. Your email inbox
Easiest spot. The confirmation email we shot over the second you submitted has your reference number right at the top, plus your submission date and a summary. Search your inbox AND spam folder for "ESTA" — should pop right up.
2. Your account dashboard
If you set up an account when applying, just log in. Every application you've ever submitted is right there with its reference number, status, and expiration date. One-click access to everything.
3. Hit up our team
Tried both above and still drawing a blank? Just message us with your passport number and the email you applied with. We'll verify your identity and dig your reference number out fast. Real humans, fast replies.
4. Your payment receipt
The receipt you got when you paid usually has your reference number on it too. If you've lost the original confirmation email, search your inbox for the payment receipt instead — same info, different envelope.
Stuff travelers ask us about status checks
How long does an ESTA actually take to come back?
Most are approved in minutes. The official line is 'up to 72 hours' for cases that need extra review. Rare exceptions take longer. The smart play: apply at least 72 hours before your flight so you've got buffer if anything gets flagged.
Can I just travel while my application is pending?
Nope, hard no on this one. The airline literally won't let you board until your ESTA is approved. Pending = not approved yet. Wait for the green light before locking in any non-refundable bookings.
My application got denied. Now what?
Don't panic — your U.S. trip isn't dead, you just need a different door. Apply for a proper B-1/B-2 visa at your nearest U.S. embassy. It's a slower process but it works. Hit our team and we'll point you in the right direction.
How often should I be checking my status?
If you got approved instantly, you don't need to check at all. If you're pending, every 12–24 hours is plenty. We also email you the moment anything changes, so just keep an eye on your inbox and you're golden.
Is checking my status online actually safe?
Yep — we use the same encryption as your bank. We don't store your reference number or email after the check is done. Your data stays yours. Privacy and security are non-negotiable for us.
My ESTA was approved but my passport's about to expire. Help?
Bummer scenario, but easy fix. When your passport dies, your ESTA dies with it. Renew your passport first, then submit a fresh ESTA application linked to the new passport number. Even if your old ESTA was just approved last week — new passport means new ESTA. No way around it.
6 hacks for stress-free status tracking ✨
We've watched thousands of travelers go through this. The ones who never have problems all do these six things. Steal the playbook:
- ✓Save your reference number the SECOND you submit. Screenshot it. Email it to yourself. Write it on your hand. Whatever works — just don't lose it.
- ✓Use an email you actually check. We'll be sending status updates here, so make sure it's not some old account you forgot the password to.
- ✓Check your spam folder if you don't see a confirmation in 30 minutes. Gmail and Outlook sometimes filter automated emails. Mark us as 'not spam' so future updates land in your main inbox.
- ✓Don't apply twice for the same trip. Duplicate applications confuse the system and slow everything down. If you're not sure if your first one went through, use the tracker BEFORE submitting a second.
- ✓Keep your passport nearby when checking status. Sometimes you'll need to verify your identity with the passport number on top of your reference and email.
- ✓Browser acting weird? Clear your cache, switch browsers, or just hit us up — we'll do the lookup for you. No need to fight with sketchy form errors.
