Modify Your ESTA Application

Certain details on your approved ESTA authorization can be updated without submitting a new application. Learn what can be changed and how we can help.

What Can Be Modified on an Approved ESTA

After your ESTA application has been approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), certain non-critical fields on your authorization record can be updated. These modifications do not require a new application and do not affect the validity of your existing ESTA. The ability to make these changes is built into the ESTA system to accommodate the reality that travel plans often evolve between the time of application and the actual date of travel.

Understanding which fields are modifiable and which are not is essential for avoiding unnecessary reapplications and additional fees. Below is a detailed breakdown of the information that can and cannot be changed on your existing ESTA authorization.

Email & Phone

Update your email address or contact phone number to ensure you receive all communications related to your ESTA status and any future travel advisories.

U.S. Point of Contact

Change the name, address, and phone number of your U.S.-based contact person. This is commonly updated when your host or business contact changes before your trip.

U.S. Address

Modify your accommodation or destination address in the United States. This is useful if you change hotels, move to a different city, or update your itinerary after approval.

Travel Itinerary

Update your flight details, travel dates, and planned destinations within the United States. Keeping your itinerary current ensures smooth processing at the port of entry.

What Cannot Be Modified

Critical identification and eligibility information is permanently tied to your ESTA authorization and cannot be altered after submission. These fields are used by CBP to verify your identity and determine your eligibility under the Visa Waiver Program. If any of the following details are incorrect, have changed, or were entered in error, you will need to submit an entirely new ESTA application with the correct information.

Full Legal Name

Your first name, middle name, and last name as they appear on your passport cannot be changed. If you have legally changed your name (for example, due to marriage or a court order), you must apply for a new ESTA using the name on your current valid passport.

Passport Information

Your passport number, country of issuance, and passport expiration date are locked once your application is submitted. If you renew your passport or receive a new passport for any reason, your existing ESTA is automatically invalidated and a new application is required.

Date of Birth & Gender

Biographical details including your date of birth, gender, and country of citizenship cannot be modified. These are core identity fields that must match your passport exactly.

Eligibility Questions

Your responses to the background and eligibility questions on the ESTA application—including questions about criminal history, health conditions, and previous immigration violations—cannot be changed after submission. If you answered any question incorrectly, you should submit a new application with accurate responses.

How to Modify Your ESTA Application: Step-by-Step

Making a modification to your existing ESTA is a straightforward process. Follow the steps below to update your permitted information quickly and securely.

1

Log In to Your Account

Access your account using the email address and password you created during the original application process. If you did not create an account, you can retrieve your application using your reference number and passport details through our status check tool.

2

Navigate to Your Application

Once logged in, go to your application dashboard where all your submitted ESTA applications are listed. Select the application you wish to modify by clicking on its reference number or the 'View Details' button.

3

Select 'Modify Application'

On your application details page, you will see the option to modify certain fields. Click the 'Modify Application' button to enter the editing mode. Only the fields that are permitted to be changed will be editable; all locked fields will appear greyed out.

4

Update Your Information

Enter the updated information in the relevant fields. Double-check all changes for accuracy before proceeding, as incorrect information could cause issues at the U.S. port of entry. Our system validates your entries in real-time to help prevent formatting errors.

5

Confirm and Save Changes

Review your modifications on the summary screen. Once you are satisfied that all changes are correct, confirm and save your updates. You will receive an email confirmation with a record of the modifications made to your ESTA authorization.

When Do You Need to Submit a New ESTA Application?

There are several common scenarios where a modification is not sufficient and a completely new ESTA application is required. Understanding these situations can save you time and prevent complications at the airport or U.S. border checkpoint.

  • You have renewed or replaced your passport since your last ESTA was approved. Your ESTA is linked to your specific passport number, so a new passport means a new application.
  • You have legally changed your name and your new passport reflects the updated name. The name on your ESTA must exactly match the name on the passport you will use for travel.
  • Your citizenship or nationality has changed since your last application. Changes in citizenship status require a fresh eligibility determination under the Visa Waiver Program.
  • You answered an eligibility question incorrectly on your original application and need to provide accurate responses. Submitting a new application with truthful answers is essential for compliance with U.S. immigration law.
  • Your existing ESTA has expired. ESTA authorizations are valid for two years from the date of approval. Once expired, a new application must be submitted for future travel to the United States.
  • You were previously denied an ESTA and wish to reapply after addressing the issue that caused the denial, such as correcting an error in your personal information.

Common Questions About Modifying Your ESTA

Is there a fee to modify my ESTA application?

Modifications to permitted fields on an approved ESTA are generally processed at no additional charge through our platform. However, if the required change necessitates a new application (for example, due to a passport renewal), the standard application fee will apply.

How long does it take for modifications to be processed?

Most modifications are processed and reflected on your authorization record within minutes. In some cases, changes may take up to 24 hours to be fully updated in the CBP system. We recommend making any necessary modifications at least 48 hours before your travel date to ensure all updates are properly recorded.

Can I modify my ESTA from my mobile phone?

Yes, our platform is fully responsive and designed to work on smartphones and tablets. You can log in, view your application, and make permitted modifications from any device with a web browser and internet connection.

What if I make a mistake during the modification process?

If you realize you entered incorrect information during a modification, you can repeat the modification process to correct the error. There is no limit to the number of times you can modify permitted fields on your ESTA authorization. Our support team is also available to assist if you need guidance.
